Packages that include the session fee
Be careful of photographers who charge the session fee separately. Why? Because you are then stuck picking a la carte items that are likely very pricey. Think of it this way. When a photographer only collects a small session fee upfront, their incentive is to SELL YOU at the order session. And that’s if they have an order session. You may be told to “go online” and order. We’ve found the “sweet spot” is to include our session fee plus our “Core 4” items in every package. No bait and switch after the photo session is over and no high pressure to buy. We also walk our clients through the order sessions so you don’t have to “do it yourself”.
More outfits isn’t necessarily a good thing
Many photographers will tell you “sure, you can bring however many outfits you want.” Why? They want you to buy at least something in every outfit. We’ve found usually 3 outfits is plenty. You can add variety with sports props, jewelry, jackets, hats and other accessories.
Fewer, better poses is the way to go
Another way photographers get more money out of you is to offer a bazillion poses. But who wants to try and pick from 200 poses that are, “eh”? After 18 years in the senior photography business, I’ve found MORE is not better. And with MORE comes “analysis paralysis”. We narrow our senior proofs down to only the best poses, making the final choices much easier.
Avoid the friend or relative with the “good camera”
Sounds tempting, and I don’t blame you. Getting good senior photos is not about what tool you use, it’s about how you use it. And it’s more than the equipment. It takes years to learn lighting, best locations, posing and directing seniors so that they feel comfortable. If a senior does not feel comfortable, the photographs will be worthless. And so many amateur photographers place too much emphasis on the BACKGROUND, when the focus really needs to be the senior. A good portrait is one where the senior is IN focus and the background is soft.

Senior portraits are best when the SENIOR is in focus and the background is out of focus.
What if my Senior HATES being photographed?
After 18 years in the business, we know how to calm nerves. There are a LOT of seniors who don’t like being photographed. Matter of fact, photo nerves are SO common, we actually wrote an entire BLOG on it. Click here to read our blog My senior hates being photographed, now what?
In short, we can assure you, that CONNECTION with your senior MATTERS. Once they feel connected, they will feel more comfortable. Successful, natural photos will result.
A commercial photography space
Though we do our Senior sessions primarily outdoors, it’s important to work with a photographer who has a commercial space? Why? There are a lot of “photographers” now who have come into the industry. Aw, the days of digital. But many of these amateur photographers are new to Senior photography and are photographers “on the side”. When working with a photographer who HAS a commercial space, you are working with a company who takes photography seriously and has likely been doing it for a while.
Our downtown Littleton studio has been a place of JOY for so many of our Littleton seniors. We use Main Street as a location option and we also display a lot of our products at the studio. Looking and touching the products, you’ll see a difference vs. viewing them online. You’ll also see different sizes of wall portraits displayed so you can determine what works. And you won’t be coming to our home to do it.
