What Makes a Great Headshot?

A headshot is more than just a picture; it’s your first hello, a glimpse of your personal brand, and a way to show off who you are, whether you’re trying to get your dream job or great photographs of your employees. Think of it as your visual introduction on places like LinkedIn, company websites, social media or email signatures. A really good headshot can say so much about you! Let’s explore the different kinds of headshots, why you might need one, some posing tips, and what makes a headshot truly successful. Whether you’re a business professional, a company looking for employee headshots, or generally want to up your game with online marketing, this friendly guide will help you get the hang of headshot photography.

Different Types of Headshots and Why They Matter

Headshots come in all sorts of styles, each made for a certain purpose. Let’s break down some of the most common types and how they can work for you:

Corporate Headshots

These are your go-to for company websites, LinkedIn, or professional bios. They show that you’re professional and easy to connect with. Usually, they have a clean background, professional clothes, and a nice, neutral expression. A small smile or a confident look is always a great way to look friendly and competent.

Personal Branding Headshots

These are perfect for entrepreneurs, freelancers, or social media stars who want to show off their unique style and brand. They’re usually more creative and include props or backgrounds that match what you’re all about. Don’t be afraid to show off your personality!

Outdoor Headshots

These add a natural, dynamic feel and are great for personal or creative uses. They’re often taken in parks or urban spots with natural light. Keep an eye on the time of day, since the “golden hour” can give you a super soft, flattering glow.

Composite Group Headshots

These are team photos for businesses or organizations. They show you’re all working together as a team. The key here is to keep the styling consistent, along with the poses and lighting across all people.

Knowing what each type of headshot is for can help you pick the best one for you.

Composites are our specialty and not many photographers do them. They allow us to photograph every person separately and marry them into the “best of'” in various groupings based on division or specialty. No one even needs to be in the same room at the same time (we work with each person’s schedule) and we can easily add or delete with attrition, so the composite stays CURRENT at all time! No need to get “everyone together” frequently to stay current. Our method is much easier!

How Headshots Change Depending on Your Industry

Each industry has its own ideas of what makes a great headshot. Changing your headshot to fit your field can help you connect with the people you want to reach. Here’s a quick rundown:

Business and Corporate

Think confident, upright poses with a slight smile. Neutral backgrounds and formal business attire like suits and blazers usually work best.

Executive Levels

These call for a confident, assertive stance with direct eye contact. You’ll want high-end office settings or clean, neutral backgrounds and tailored suits with polished accessories.

Creative Professionals

Relaxed, approachable poses, often with a bit of playfulness, work well here. Artistic or colorful backgrounds and stylish, but professional clothing that highlights your authentic self are a great choice.

Medical and Healthcare

Friendly and approachable expressions build trust. Clinical or neutral backgrounds work best along with lab coats or scrubs.

Adjusting your headshot to fit your industry helps you make a great impression.
