Denver personal branding photos- finding the right jacket for your photo session

Denver personal branding photos: Finding the right jacket for your photo session can make all the difference.

And if you are NOT wearing the right jacket, you may be sabotaging your photos.

Finding the RIGHT jacket for your headshot/personal branding session is different from what you wear everyday. These photos show the RIGHT jackets.

We’ve all been there: you pick out your favorite outfit for a professional photo shoot, only to get the proofs back and wonder why you look… off.

In this video, I’m using my own “closet favorite”—a gorgeous blue jacket—to show you why everyday fashion and photography styling are two completely different ballgames.

What we’re covering:

🫠 The Silhouette Struggle: Why a jacket that doesn’t “skim” your curves can make you look bulkier than you are.

😉 The Button Rule: Why being able to close your jacket is essential for clean lines (even if you plan to wear it open!).

😁 The Hand-on-Hip Test: How a jacket that “flares out” can ruin your favorite power pose.

If you want to look polished, professional, and like the best version of you in your next headshot or branding session, this is a must-watch.

The Illusion of “The Box”

The biggest culprit in a bad photo-jacket is the stiffness of the fabric. A jacket that is perfect for a coffee date might be made of a rigid material that refuses to move with you. When you strike that classic “hand-on-hip” power pose, a stiff jacket won’t collapse against your body; it will kick out to the side. This creates a “tent effect,” adding inches of visual weight and hiding the natural curve of your waist. You want a jacket that skims, not one that shrouds.

The “Button-Up” Rule of Thumb

Even if you never plan on actually closing the jacket, it must be able to button comfortably. Why? Because the distance between the two lapels dictates the vertical line of your torso. If a jacket is too small to button, the lapels will pull toward your armpits, creating horizontal tension lines across your chest and making the shoulders look pinched. A well-fitted jacket creates a clean “V” shape that draws the viewer’s eye up toward your face—the most important part of the brand.

Fabric and Lighting

Photoshoots involve high-intensity lighting that picks up textures your eyes miss in the office. A jacket with too much “fuzz” or a cheap sheen can look messy or dated under a strobe. Choosing a jacket with a slight stretch or a refined weave ensures that even when you are twisting or leaning, the fabric remains smooth.

Ultimately, your jacket should be the frame, not the focus. When the fit is right, it highlights your confidence and your silhouette, ensuring that the first thing people notice is your smile, not a flared-out hemline.
