Tips on how to create a successful headshot photography session
Before your photo session date:
1. Evaluate your “why”
If you can pinpoint WHY you are doing this headshot session, and why you LOVE what you do, that will come across in your images. You’re never selling if you are truly coming from a place of passion for your work. Also, think about WHO you are trying to attract and dress accordingly. Bring YOU to the photo session and be sure to communicate your WHY to your photographer. Our goal is to photograph you in a way that makes YOU feel good (first), and then attract the right people into your life.
2. Pamper yourself with a little self care
Take some time just for you. Doing the following activities will help center you. You’re not ALL work and no play, right? So consider some of these suggestions a week or 2 beforehand. Coming in relaxed and happy will set the tone for your session.
- Get a facial and exfoliate the dead skin
- Get outside for some fresh air
- Read an inspirational book. We recommend “Take Time for your Life” by Cheryl Richardson
- Listen to music you love
- Whiten your teeth (makes a huge difference, though no worries we do that on the “back end” for you also!)
3. Play your session in your head ahead of time
Yes, sports athletes even do it. Picture how easily and simply your session will go. Imagine getting ready, smiling and speaking positively to yourself as you dress. Grabbing a cup of coffee on the way. Parking comes easy. You are greeted with a smile and feel very welcome. You receive expert attention and get a ton of guidance on how to pose, where to place your hands, and help with your expression. You see some of the images on the back of the camera and you are thrilled with the way you look.
4. Do this for YOU!
If you come into the headset session trying to “please others”, it won’t work. Success will result if YOU love the pictures!
5. Step in (even if you feel nervous)
Ever play a sport? Remember before a big game, how the nerves kicked in? Here’s the good news. The same chemicals get released in your body when you feel NERVOUS as when you are EXCITED! So, when you start feeling the “pre-game butterflies” just tell yourself, “I guess I’m just excited”. And by the way, I will HELP YOU!! I will completely direct the session from your head to your toes. So no need to worry about what to do with your hands, or where to look, or how to stand. I’ve got you!
