Finding Work That Fits Your Personality: 6 Steps

work that fits your personality
As a photographer with decades of experience, I’ve learned a lot about finding work that fits your personality. At 60 years old, I’ve come to realize that understanding and embracing your personality is key to both happiness and success in your career. Today, I want to share my journey and insights on how to choose work that aligns with who you are and how to adjust your focus for greater fulfillment.

The Evolution of Self-Understanding

With each passing year, I’ve gained a clearer picture of what I want to do – and perhaps more importantly, what I don’t want to do. This self-awareness has been crucial in shaping my photography business and my approach to work in general.
As I’ve grown older, I’ve recognized that I’m more on the introverted side of the spectrum. But that’s not all – I’m also what’s known as an HSP, or Highly Sensitive Person. For those unfamiliar with the term, being an HSP means having a heightened sensitivity to physical, emotional, and social stimuli. It’s a trait that affects about 15-20% of the population, and while it can present challenges, I’ve come to view it as my superpower.

Recognizing My Strengths and Limitations

In the early days of my photography career, I found myself taking on a wide variety of assignments – weddings, group shots, large events. While these gigs helped pay the bills, I quickly realized they were draining me both physically and emotionally. (Key indicators for knowing if what your doing is truly work that fits your personality!) The constant social interaction, the pressure of capturing fleeting moments, and the sensory overload of bustling events were at odds with my introverted, HSP nature.

Tailoring My Business to My Personality

This realization led to a significant shift in my business model. Now, here on my website, you’ll notice a very specific focus: I exclusively photograph one person at a time. My clients are typically headshot or personal branding clients, or individuals – often in their 60s and 70s – looking for dating profile photos. Occasionally, I’ll work with a high school senior, but my primary focus is on women in business, many of whom are introverts or HSPs themselves.
This shift has been transformative! By aligning my work with my personality, I’ve found that I’m not only HAPPIER and less stressed, but I’m also producing BETTER work. The one-on-one interactions allow me to create a calm, comfortable environment where both my client and I can relax and let creativity flow. Now that’s work that fits your personality!

The Power of Personality-Aligned Work

My experience has taught me that when your work aligns with your personality, magic happens. You’re not constantly fighting against your natural inclinations or draining your energy reserves. Instead, you’re able to tap into your unique strengths and bring your whole self to your work.
For me, this means creating a serene, focused environment where I can connect deeply with one client at a time. It means having the space to notice the tiny shifts in expression that make for a compelling portrait. It means being able to use my sensitivity to create a safe, comfortable space for my clients, many of whom are not naturally comfortable in front of the camera.

How to Align Your Work with Your Personality

If you’re feeling drained or unfulfilled in your current work, it might be time to reassess if it’s work that fits your personality. Here are some steps you can take:
1. Self-reflection: Take time to really understand yourself. What energizes you? What drains you? Are you an introvert or an extrovert? Are you highly sensitive? What are your core values?
2. Analyze your current work: Look at your daily tasks and interactions. Which ones do you enjoy? Which ones leave you feeling depleted?
3. Identify your ideal work environment: Based on your personality, what would your perfect workday look like? Who would you interact with? What kind of tasks would you do?
4. Make small adjustments: You don’t have to overhaul your entire career overnight. Start with small changes. Can you restructure your day to do energy-draining tasks when you’re at your best? Can you create a quieter workspace?
5. Communicate your needs: If you’re working for someone else, don’t be afraid to discuss your needs with your supervisor. Many employers are willing to make accommodations if it means having a happier, more productive employee.
6. Consider a pivot: If your current field really doesn’t suit your personality, it might be time to consider a career change. Look for roles or industries that align better with who you are.

The Rewards of Personality-Aligned Work

Since aligning my photography business with my personality, I’ve experienced numerous benefits:
– Increased energy and enthusiasm for my work
– Better connections with my clients
– Improved quality of my photographs
– Less stress and better work-life balance
– A stronger, more focused brand for my business
– Greater overall job satisfaction
Remember, this is a journey, not a destination. As you grow and change, your ideal work may evolve too. The key is to stay tuned in to yourself and be willing to make adjustments as needed.

A Final Thought

As I wrap up this post, I want to leave you with this reminder: be sure to regularly check in with your personality and make sure that you are doing what you love, with the people you love, in a way that honors who you are. For me, that means one-on-one photo sessions in a calm, intimate setting. For you, it might mean something entirely different.
Your personality is not a limitation – it’s a guide to your best work and your most fulfilling life. Embrace it, honor it, and watch how it can transform your career and your happiness.
