What’s Your Style?
Take a look at the types of senior pictures you absolutely LOVE. Are they studio shots, outdoor shots, glamour shots? Kelly’s style is to NOT use flash because she just LOVES to work with natural lighting. As Kelly says, “Only on rare occasions do I use flash only if there’s a lot of backlighting because it can look fake and artificial and not natural looking. Most of the time I only use a reflector to eliminate shadows to bounce light into your eyes.” If you want the flashy, dramatic look, you may prefer working with someone who uses flash and staged lighting, BUT if you love the natural, authentic, simple-yet-powerful look, Kelly’s style is a great fit. Kelly describes her style as “casual, rather than formal, introspective vs. extroverted, off-center vs. symmetrical, thoughtful vs. reactive.”
What Makes You Unique?
Besides the photographer’s style, getting to know them and their personality and strengths will help you determine if you want to work with them for your senior pictures. Kelly has a TON that makes her unique. First off, she prioritizes getting to KNOW her clients by having them complete a personality profile. She really takes the time to understand you and really “get” you. A lot of studios don’t take the time to do this because they book 7 to 10 sessions in one day. Kelly only books 1 to 2 sessions a day for many reasons. She doesn’t want to have cookie-cutter sessions for senior pictures, and she wants to give her clients the time and energy that they deserve. One of her senior student clients recently remarked, “Boy! You are so patient with me with all of my clothing changes!” This is because Kelly doesn’t book clients immediately after your session, so you will NOT feel rushed and you will have the space to get comfortable and ROCK your senior photo session. As Kelly says, “Rushing doesn’t help anyone. Oftentimes, my clients need time to warm up, and because I give them the time they need, they don’t feel pushed or awkward.”
What Are You Passionate About?
This is another terrific question to understand what makes your photographer tick. Kelly is devoted to her style, which she describes as engaging, personal, creative, moving and off-center. She says, “I like to make my clients dance, twirl, laugh, jump and let go.” She also feels very STRONGLY about personal connections. She strives to provide what she sees as missing personal attention to her clients’ sessions and senior pictures. Because she focuses on personal connections, she excels at capturing her clients’ essence, that electrifying sparkle, that pizzazz, that one-of-a-kind, special somethin’, that “je ne sais quoi” about a person that can be very challenging to capture in a photo.
